Sea Together caught up with Lydia Ricard, an inspiring surfer who learned how to surf at age 21 amongst the cold frigid waters of Canada. She shared about her journey of learning to surf at age 21 and now becoming a competitive surfer in Canada.

We interviewed artist and surfer, Madeline O'Donoghue, from New Zealand. She has a distinct illustrative art style that highlights the feelings of surf culture and often includes women surfers and text in her work. Check out her website here for more of her work.

This week, we present a piece on Marissa Miller’s work as President of the Cal Poly Surfrider Foundation Club, written by Charlotte Ross. At the end of the piece, we showcase art by Kara Gibson, a student at the University of California Santa Barbara, as well as a short bio Kara wrote about herself.

Brought together on land and united at sea, Lilja the “groovy plant lover,” Emma the “surfer cowgirl,” and Kainani the “little moon child” have created a beautiful friendship both in and out of the ocean.

As told to Alicia King, Kim McKenzie shares her experience competing in the 1975 Smirnoff Pro. She notes, “The men were out there to make a living, but we [women] were pushing the envelope and doing whatever we could to be included. For us it was so much bigger.”
